Paranormal Activity 2 – Review

With a bigger budget and the pressure of building on a successful predecessor Paranormal Activity 2 tries too hard and fails to engage and scare.

The more camera angles we’re given the less time we have to focus on a particular frame and get all paranoid about what is about to happen. While the first film slowly crept up on you, the sequel is constantly try to grab your attention.

Also the amount of exposition is completely unnecessary as we don’t need to know what’s going on; that is why it is scary.

On the plus side the film has a few big scares and it fits the first quite neatly. The dog is a particular highlight.

Where this film will succeed is when watched alone at home when it’s dark outside and you’ve got the windows open. In a cinema the audience gets restless and giggling can ruin the effect.

No third film please.

Out Now – 22nd October 2010

Some quite good films out today, there’s two I definitely want to see but I’m too busy seeing other films! Maybe next week.

Africa United
Some Rwandan kids walk 3000 miles to the world cup in South Africa. I really hope they like football… and have tickets.

Alpha and Omega
Two wolves who totally don’t get on somehow end up far away from their pack and have to work together to get home. At some point they fall in love. I really hope there’s a sassy black wolf.

The story of the famous terrorist Ilich Ramirez Sanchez. Supposed to be rather good, though I’d see the just under 3 hour long version rather than the 5 1/2 hour epic they showed at the festival last weekend.

Easy A
92 minutes of Emma Stone being funny. Sure it won’t be amazing but it’ll be way above average and attractive to boot. Exciting stuff.

Legends Of The Guardians: The Owls Of Ga’Hoole
Because Zack Snyder directing a dark animated film for kids about owls is a good idea.

Paranormal Activity 2
It’s almost Halloween so time to get scared, but not actually Halloween beacause then Saw 3D might reduce opening weekend ticket sales.

Ramona and Beezus
An apparently tame adaptation of some much loved books. Still the tween you’re trying to groom will love it!

Helen Mirren has a gun, and old people do action! This joke so won’t get tired after 2 hours.

The Arbor (limited release)
This got lots of buzz at the festival, a documentary with acting in it about playwright Andrea Dunbar.

Mary & Max (limited release)
A gorgeous looking stop motion animation featuring the voices of brilliant actors about two pen pals. There may be three films I want to see this week.

Twilight Gets Scary, No Thanks to Twilight

Uhoh, before they could even reach terrifying amounts of angst Twilight fans have been getting a bit too frightened in American cinemas. Apparently the trailer for Paranormal Activity 2 which is shown with the film is just too frightening to be shown with the film and people are complaining. It has even been pulled from cinemas in Texas.

I’ll admit the trailer is scary but to go see a film about vampires and werewolves and then complain when you get scared? Grow up.
