Paper Souls DVD Competition

Paper Souls

Since the death of his wife Paul (Stephan Guillon) has made his money writing funeral speeches for those who are grieving and can’t quite find the words to say for themselves. Emma (Julie Gavet) is a widow with a young son who hires Paul to write about her dead husband for the sake of her son. As Paul spends time with Emma researching her husband they grow closer and closer. Just as it looks as though romance might be about to blossom Paul gets a most unexpected visitor in the form of Emma’s husband’s ghost who is fully corporeal but has no idea who he is. This is a love triangle that transcends life and death.

Short Term 12 Blu-Ray Competition

Short Term 12

Lost in all the hullabaloo of the London Film Festival you might have missed my gushing review for Short Term 12. For some reason I gave the film only four stars which in hindsight was a little too reserved of me.

Set in an American foster home Short Term 12 looks at the lives of the children seeking shelter there and the equally complicated lives of the staff, in particular the strong and slightly broken Grace as played by Brie Larson. Larson has a lot of supporting roles in comedy films under her belt but her performance here is nothing short of a revelation. She truly is a remarkable actress and I wish Short Term 12 had been seen by a few more eyeballs when it went on limited release in the UK.

With the DVD and Blu-ray release coming up on 10th March I’m going to have a little push to get you to see this film and I am helped by the fact that I have three copies of the Blu-Ray to give away!

To be in with a chance of winning one of the Short Term 12 Blu-rays simply enter your details below:

Bono and Geldof are C**ts – Comedy Tickets Competition

Jane Bussmann

Probably a prize for someone who can fill in the blanks in the title of this competition and not be offended…

On the 8th and 9th November at University College London in Bloomsbury the first ever One World Media Festival is being held. The festival “brings together the most innovative minds from across the global media industry for two days of insight and inspiration.” Closing the festival is Jane Bussmann with a live comedy show that you simply cannot buy tickets for enigmatically titled Bono and Geldof are C**ts. The show will be performed at UCL on 9th November 2013 at 6:30pm. More details below:

In this special presentation of her live comedy show, award-winning author and comedienne Jane Bussmann takes an acerbic look at how celebrities manipulate the media in order to control global conversations. How celebrities, fuelled by charities, steal the voices of the most vulnerable and present messages that instead of alleviating the problems they campaign for, in fact precipitate them. Bussmann deconstructs and lays bare how 30 years of the most sophisticated charity media campaigns has created “The Poverty Industry”.

Jane Bussmann is an award-winning British comedy writer and performer who has written for over fifty shows including South Park, Brass Eye and double Emmy-winner Smack The Pony. She has written columns for The Guardian, the Mail on Sunday and The Face.

We have four (FOUR!) pairs of tickets to give away to the event, to be in with a chance to win simply enter your details below and four winners will be chosen at midday on 7th November.

Wonderfalls DVD Competition

Wonderfalls

Anyone with their finger on the pulse of cult TV will remember the series Wonderfalls. The show only lasted one season and originally aired a decade ago but it is a gem and falls into that long list of shows that were cancelled long before their time. Having only aired in the UK on Sky One it has taken a long time for Wonderfalls to make it to UK DVD but the long wait is over on 28th October 2013.

If you aren’t Wonderfalls-savvy then let me fill you in. The series revolves around Jaye Tyler (Caroline Dhavernas), a recent graduate who is stuck in a dead-end job in a Niagra Falls gift shop. Her uneventful life takes on a strange new direction when inanimate objects start telling her to do things. Unsure whether she is actually receiving messages from a higher power or simply going insane Jaye soon finds that following the objects’ advice leads to unexpected, often remarkable, consequences.

The show is very funny, incredibly unique, and is much mourned by myself. While I would encourage you to buy the DVD when it is released next week we do have one copy to giveaway to a Mild Concern reader so for a chance to win simply fill out the form below:

Top of the Lake DVD Competition

Top of the Lake

Now that we’ve all calmed down from the excitement of Doctor Who, or simply dared to return online now that everyone has stopped screaming, we can get on with business.

At the weekend I gave some praise to BBC drama Top of the Lake which is currently a few weeks away from its shattering conclusion (I’ve seen it, it made me anxious) and now I am going to make it even easier for you to get your peepers on the show by giving away a copy of the series on DVD.

If you want to binge watch an amazing crime drama with complex characters set in New Zealand and starring Elisabeth Moss as a detective returning to her hometown to investigate the disappearance of a pregnant 14 year old (nice synopsis insertion there if I do say so myself) then simply enter your details below for a chance to win.

Live by the Lake – Singin’ in the Rain Competition

Live by the Lake

There are many things in life which can be made all the more pleasurable simply by being moved outside. Film is no exception to this rule.

Live by the Lake is a series of summer concerts performed at Kenwood House in North West London across six days from August 23rd-25th and August 30th-September 1st. This is a great excuse to grab a picnic and enjoy live music in an outdoor setting. The full line-up is below:

August 23rd: SUEDE and special guests BRITISH SEA POWER
August 24th: ROYAL CHORAL SOCIETY and the ROYAL PHILHARMONIC CONCERT ORCHESTRA
August 25th: KEANE and special guest LAURA MVULA
August 30th: ‘SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN’ – film screening, score performed by the ROYAL PHILHARMONIC CONCERT ORCHESTRA
August 31st: ANA MARIA MARTINEZ and the ENGLISH NATIONAL OPERA ORCHESTRA
September 1st: MICHAEL BALL and friends sing GERSHWIN

No surprise the event that really stick out for us is the screening of Singin’ in the Rain on 30th August. Not only is this a great film that was surely a major inspiration for The Artist but the score will be performed live by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. And let’s not forget that you can watch all this while eating a picnic. Picnics and films are made to go together.

Tickets are now on sale at kenwood.seetickets.com or if you feeling lucky we have 2 tickets to give away to a Mild Concern reader.

To win the tickets simply enter your details in the form below:

Win a Copy of The Comedian on DVD

The Comedian

You may remember me gushing last month about The Comedian, the story of a stand-up comic struggling with life and love in modern-day London. For me the film really captured something truthful about what it is like to live in a large vibrant city and the excitement and the loneliness it can bring. Real my full review for lots of gushing and attempts at sounding intelligent.

All too often I sing the praises of a film whilst knowing full well that most people won’t get the opportunity to see it. Thankfully in the case of The Comedian I have three copies to give away on DVD. I have taken the bold decision to give these away as three prizes rather than leave one lucky winner in the slightly awkward position of having the same film on DVD three times.

To enter simply enter you details below. The competition is open to UK residents over 18 years old. The competition closes on 29th July 2013 at 5pm at which time three winners will be chosen at random and the prizes sent to the addresses as provided below.

The Comedian is released on DVD on 30th July and is a treat of a film.
