With the Emmys being awarded this weekend it’s about time I looked at the nominations and picked my personal favourites from amongst the mix. I’m not saying these will be the winners, just that if I had a say, they would be.
Outstanding Comedy Series
Modern Family
The Office
Parks and Recreation
30 Rock
I love all four of these series but if any is starved for the recognition it deserves then it is Parks and Recreation. Only a show this good could tempt Rob Lowe to be part of an ensemble again.
Outstanding Drama Series
Dexter
Mad Men
With no Breaking Bad on offer I’ll have to pip for Dexter, though this category has become a little stale with the same shows present over the years.
Outstanding Miniseries or Made for Television Movie
Downton Abbey
As the only mini-series I’ve watched all the way through it has to be Downton Abbey. Besides, Americans love a bit of period British melodrama.
Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series
Alec Baldwin for 30 Rock
Steve Carell for The Office
Matt LeBlanc for Episodes
Alec Baldwin is clearly the best of the bunch, but Carell could easily take home the trophy to commemorate him leaving the show. Matt LeBlanc winning would be a real surprise.
Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series
Michael C. Hall for Dexter
Jon Hamm for Mad Men
Hugh Laurie for House
Timothy Olyphant for Justified
Another category getting a little stale, let’s have Olyphant win just to keep things interesting.
Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series
Edie Falco for Nurse Jackie
Tina Fey for 30 Rock
Martha Plimpton for Raising Hope
Amy Poehler for Parks and Recreation
Poehler or Plimpton deserve some recognition, but Poehler is the most likely of the pair.
Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series
Elisabeth Moss for Mad Men
Come on Moss! She is truly outstanding.
Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series
Ty Burrell for Modern Family
Jesse Tyler Ferguson for Modern Family
Ed O’Neill for Modern Family
Eric Stonestreet for Modern Family
Any of the above, it is hard to choose a favourite from such an ensemble cast.
Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series
Peter Dinklage for Game of Thrones
John Slattery for Mad Men
It’s got to be Dinklage, he is the best thing in the world ever. No exaggeration.
Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series
Julie Bowen for Modern Family
Jane Krakowski for 30 Rock
Jane Lynch for Glee
Sofía Vergara for Modern Family
Kristen Wiig for Saturday Night Live
Anyone apart from bloody Betty White.
Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series
Christina Hendricks for Mad Men
Kelly Macdonald for Boardwalk Empire
Hendricks should win for bringing such a layered personality to the character of Joan.
Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or Movie
Maggie Smith for Downton Abbey
Evan Rachel Wood for Mildred Pierce
Both have very different appeals, I couldn’t possibly decide.
Outstanding Variety, Music Or Comedy Series
The Colbert Report
The Daily Show
Two hilarious, politically charged shows which we need back on UK TV.
Outstanding Reality Program
Antiques Roadshow
Just because seeing Antiques Roadshow winning would amuse me, especially if they played Joe Cornish’s remix of the theme tune:
